Nigeria's 1-0 loss to Cote d'Ivoire in the semi-final match of the 25th Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt on Tuesday has received attention in local newspapers Wednesday, with many featuring headlines that play on the two teams' names.
"Elephants trample on Eagles," is the headline in the private Guardian newspaper, while the Comet writes: "Eagles fail to fly."
Zeroing in on the scorer of Cote d'Ivoire's lone goal, ThisDay newspaper writes: "Drogba ends Eagles' Cup dreams."
Didier Drogba, who plays for the English premiership club Chelsea, scored the goal which Nigeria coach Augustine Eguavoen believed was offside, after he (Drogba) out-smarted the Nigerian defence.
"End of the road" (Punch), "Referee ruins Eagles" (Sun) and "Eagles crash out of Nations Cup (Daily Independent), are some of the other headlines.
Disappointed Nigerian fans have blamed the Super Eagles' lacklustre play for the loss, which effectively ended the country's quest for its third Nations Cup title.
