The just ended 25th Africa Cup of Nations (ACN) finals is regarded to have broken all records in the annals of the continental football competition.
The "Pharaohs" of Egypt beat the "Elephants" of Cote d'Ivoire 4-2 following post-match spot kicks on Friday evening after the two national teams had played to a 0-0 draw at the end of 120 minutes.
By that victory Egypt became the first nation to win the continental trophy five times in 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998 and 2006. With effect from this year, five stars will be added to the national team's jersey.
On the other hand, the team's veteran and skipper, Hossam Hassan (39) became the oldest player in the history of ACN to score a goal in the finals. Hossam scored a goal when the "Pharaohs" routed the DR Congo's "Simba" 4-1 in the quarter finals.
Hossan Hassan is also the only player in Africa to have lifted the cup on three occasions in 1986, 1998 and 2006. He also shares another record with the retired Ivorian goalkeeper Alain Gouaméné, who participated in seven ACN finals.
Meanwhile, Rigobert Song, a defender and captain of the "Indomitable Lions" of Cameroon, broke the record set by his compatriot Emmanuel Kundé and the Ivorian Alain, has played 27 ACN final matches. The two other who held the previous record had played 24 ACN final matches each.
On the other hand, the 12-11 quarterfinal penalty shoot-out between Côte d'Ivoire and Cameroon was also the longest in the history of the continental competition.
Cote d'Ivoire had set the previous record in Dakar, Senegal in 1992 when it won the cup by scoring 11-10 penalties against Ghana to win the ACN trophy.
