Members of Nigeria's Football Supporters Club that came to Egypt to cheer the Super Eagles at the just-concluded African Nations Cup tournament are apparently stranded in Cairo, the Egyptian capital.
The cheering team, PANA gathered, came to the event with 200 members aboard one of the major carriers on credit. But the cheerleaders have not settled a greater part of the debt expected to be paid to charter flight that conveyed the group to Egypt on the eve of Super Eagles's Group D opening match against the Ghana's Black Stars at Port Said stadium.
The said amount was expected to be paid on or before 7 February but the club could not meet up with its financial obligation and this necessitated the leader of the club to call a briefing shortly after the second group match in Port Said to appeal to all corporate bodies and well-meaning individuals that promised to assist the club to live up to their pledges to save the club from its present predicament.
According to the plan, especially with the elimination of Nigeria in the semi-finals by Ivory Coast in Alexandria, the team was to witness some part of the final match after which they would proceed to the airport for the onward journey home.
But as of Sunday morning, the team was still stranded in Cairo.
The worrisome aspect of the whole scenario is that the majority of the band members may soon become a nuisance.
"We have enjoyed tremendous support from the Sports Ministry and don't forget that the Sports Minister, Dr Seidu Sambawa, gave us $50,000 and part of our accommodation costs in Egypt.
"Globacom have been wonderful because, without the company, we would not even think of coming here. But to charter an aircraft requires a lot of money but if all the pledges promised us had been fulfilled, we would not have found ourselves in this predicament," Dr Rafiu Ladipo, the group's leader, lamented.
He, however, revealed that the Governor of Kwara State, Dr Bukola Saraki, boosted the club with N2.5 million that they received last Tuesday after Nigeria's ouster by the Elephants of Cote D' Ivoire.
A top member of the club, however, told PANA that the smoke of uncertainty would be clear before the end of the week.
"We have faced worst situations than this and came out stronger in our avowed determination to support Nigeria at all international competitions," an executive member said on Sunday.
