Two Moroccan inmates recently stabbed each other inside the Marrakech civil prison 250km south of Rabat after divergent interpretations over the ongoing African Cup of Nations (CAN) finals in Egypt, reliable sources said here Monday.
After failing to reach a consensus, the prisoners Salah E-G (35) and Abdelaziz (36) violently fought one another using kitchen knives.
Salah, a former hotel employee who was serving an 18-month sentence for drug trafficking, was rushed to the prison's dispensary after being stabbed in the stomach.
His adversary, Abdelaziz, a painter, who was sentenced to eight months in prison for robbery with violence, was taken to the Marrakech hospital with a deep stomach wound.
The two inmates died last Friday in Rabat where they had been taken for advanced treatment, the sources said.
The Moroccan national football team, which reached the 2004 ACN final in 2004 in Tunisia, was booted out in the first round of this year's tournament, whose semi-final matches will be played Tuesday.
In the first match, Nigeria faces Cote d'Ivoire, while hosts Egypt play Senegal.
