Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has, on behalf of the government and all Nigerians, congratulated the Super Eagles on their gallant victory over the Tunisian national team in Saturday's quarter-finals match of the Africa Cup of Nations in Port Said, Egypt.
Having joined millions of soccer-loving Nigerians in watching every minute of the pulsating encounter on television, President Obasanjo commended the Super Eagles for their artistry, skills, courage, determination and never-say-die spirit which won them a remarkable victory over the Tunisians.
The President noted that the victory was a most elevating one for all Nigerians and that the Super Eagles had, by their triumph, buoyed the spirits of all their compatriots and given them immense joy.
He urged the Super Eagles to continue to remain focused on ultimate victory in the championship, assuring them that the government would give them all the support they required to achieve victory in the semi-finals and finals of the competition.
The President also assured them of prayers and best wishes of all Nigerians for their ultimate victory in the Nations Cup.
In a related development, the Speaker of the lower House of Representatives, Aminu Bello Masari, has also sent a congratulatory message to the team, saying the people of the country would continue to pray for them as they seek to win their third African Nations Cup title.
Meanwhile, celebrations continued across Nigeria over the hard-earned victory. In Lagos, hundreds of fans danced through major streets in celebration of the victory - a scene that was repeated in many cities across the
soccer-loving nation.
Drinking joints were packed full with revellers, who had converged on the spots to watch the match because of the epileptic power supply in the city.
The media were not left out of the celebrations, with the state-run Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) leading the nightly news with the report of the Eagles victory, followed by an analysis by football experts.
