Cairo, Egypt (PANA) - The Elephants of Cote d'Ivoire's second victory that led them to qualify for the quarterfinals in the 25th Africa Cup of Nations Cup tournament gave the Ivorian press lots to talk about on Wednesday.
The official Fraternite Matin, headlined "The Elephants In Quarterfinals," praised the result obtained by the boys of French coach Henri Michel, while castigating their rather poor performance.
"Without being extraordinary, Didier Drogba and his team-mates managed to get the job done to reach the quarterfinals."
The independent daily, "Dernières Nouvelles d'Abidjan," touched on the "poor performance" of the Ivorian team as well: "Didier Drogba and his team-mates have got another three precious points by beating Libya. A difficult victory but the job was done."
For "Le Courrier", a daily close to the ruling party, the Ivorian Popular Front, the headline, "Elephants - Still Something Amiss", said it all.
"The Libya-Cote d'Ivoire tie which, according to observers, was expected to be the game where Ivorians would display greater technical and tactical skills has, once again, set people talking.
"So much so that the elephants suffered in building up their victory over Libya. This is a sign that the rest of the competition may be difficult for the pachyderms," the paper said.
"Nord Sud" took a look at the technical difficulties that still obtain within the Ivorian team and wrote: "Unable to enhance the level of their play, the Elephants were nervous yesterday in the game versus Libya."
"I am satisfied of the result obtained by my players and, especially, of their production. My concern in effecting four changes is to give each player a chance to display his form of the moment as we are in a championship.
"Now, we are going to get back to work to prepare for the quarterfinals. At this level, we have no preference. We will take any adversary. Our aim is to qualify," said Michel the coach.
