Lome, Togo (PANA) - Soccer fans in Lome are still in shock over Togo's 0-2 upset by DR Congo in their group match Saturday at CAN in Egypt.
The enthusiasm displayed by the supporters in the run-up to the competition is giving way to a national disappointment.
The Deckon junction in Lome, the usual rallying point of fans after previous victories by the national squad, was empty after Saturday's match.
Several bars and discotheques, which had advertised post-match celebrations were left in shock.
To underscore the depth of the disappointment, some private television and radio stations which had announced post-match programmes also cancelled the talk shows and played music instead.
Some fans were critical of the players they had praised in the run-up to the competition, with several supporters expressing scepticism over the country's chances.
A commentator on private TV7 channel described the loss as "ignominious."
But some analysts insist the defeat should serve as a lesson to the young Togo team, coached by former Nigerian international Stephen Keshi.
