Alexandria, Egypt (PANA) - Despite displaying equal strength in the first half, RD Congo's Tresor Mputu Mabi managed to chip in a 45th minute shot to give the Simbas victory over World Cup qualifier Togo in their first Group B match of the 25th African Cup of Nations played in Cairo, Egypt, on Saturday.
Put through by Tresor "Lua Lua" Lomano, Mputu made no mistake as he coolly chipped the ball over the goalkeeper into the net to begin the celebrations.
In the second half, in an effort worthy of his international status, Lua Lua blasted home the Simba's second goal in the 63rd minute after outmanoeuvring Togolese defender Eric Akoto within the area.
Despite Coach Stephen Keshi's drafting into the game his injured prolific striker Emmanuel Adebayor in the 60th minute, the day belonged to Lua Lua and his fellow lions.
Togo's loss made it the second World Cup qualifier after Angola to lose their first match of the tournament. Earlier Angola has lost 3-1 to Cameroon.
RD Congo faces Angola on Wednesday, and Togo clashes with Cameroon on the same day in Group B.
In Group C on Sunday, African champions Tunisia will take on Zambia, while South Africa faces Guinea in the first matches of the group.
