Bujumbura, Burundi (PANA) - Viewers in Burundi may not watch the 2006 African Cup of Nations (CAN) as the country's National Radio and Television (RTNB) is still short of the 261,000 euros needed to buy broadcast rights for the event, managing director Leonidas Hakizimana as said.
Burundi has never reached the CAN finals, but viewers in the country have always watched the event, often via Canal France International CFI).
For this year's edition, a private Beninese television channel has exclusive broadcasting rights, Hakizimana told PANA Thursday.
For the time being, football lovers in Burundi are hoping that President Pierre Nkurunziza, an ardent fan of the game, will help solve the
problem.
However, some Burundians are questioning the logic of spending about 300 million Burundian francs to watch football when for several months the government cannot bring relief to regions affected by famine.
