Zambia skipper Christopher Katongo has insisted that his youthful team will not be intimidated by the pedigree or the raw power of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon when the two teams clash in a crucial Group C tie here on Saturday.
"Cameroon may be four-time African champions but they will have to prove this against us on Saturday. They will have to fight for everything," said Katongo, who is expected back in the team after he was suspended for the opening group encounter against Sudan on Tuesday.
"In football today, there are no longer underdogs. We are not as famous as they are but we are hungry to also make a name for ourselves and one way we can do that is to beat them.
"The game is also not about raw strength. You have to be organised and play as a team so that after 90 minutes, you will have something to show for all the hard work."
Even in the absence of the Brondby striker, Zambia's leading scorer in the qualifying series for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations with four goals, the Chipolopolo scored a comfortable 3-0 victory over Sudan.
"It was great to watch the team win against Sudan. It was very important to pick up the full points. And now if we work harder against the Cameroonians, we will be playing in the quarterfinals."
Zambia, who have also been boosted by the return to fitness of two players from malaria, have won three of their 10 encounters against Cameroon while four of these clashes ended in a draw. The Chipolopolo have scored 19 goals as against 15 goals scored by Cameroon.
Against Egypt Tuesday, Cameroon slumped 4-2 and were a mere shadow of the team that have won the competition four times as they laboured to keep pace with the defending champions.
FC Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o has promised the team a handsome cash prize to reach the last four of the competition and said he is confident they will get their campaign back on track by winning their remaining group games.
"In 2006, we were eliminated on penalties in the quarter-finals. For this tournament, despite the loss to Egypt, it is not yet finished for us. We will win our two remaining matches and qualify for the next round," said Eto, who is just a goal shy of Laurent Pokou's all-time tournament record of 13 goals.
Midfielders Alexandre Song and Achilles Emana appear to have forced their way into the starting eleven after they replaced Olympic team star Landry Nguemo and Stephane Mbia at half time and ensured the Lions put up a far better fight in the second period against Egypt.
The disappointed Cameroonians sneaked out of the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi immediately after the game and officials later barred visitors from the team's Georgia Hotel so that the players could fully concentrate on the Zambia clash.
"We respect Zambia. On paper we are the favourites and we know we are capable of winning this match. We don't have a choice but to win this match as well as our last group game against Sudan," declared goalkeeper trainer Thomas Nkono.
