Despite the failure of the Black Stars to achieve the "host and win" dream of Ghanaians, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) says it is satisfied with the performance of French coach, Claude Le Roy and will give him a new contract when the current agreement expires at the end of this month.

The position of the GFA is at variance with the thinking of many Ghanaians who believe the Black Stars were eliminated because of the technical ineptitude of the coach and have been clamouring for his dismissal.

Many soccer fans blamed him for picking injured players at the expense of fit and ready to fight players, citing the selection of Shilla Illiasu, who had not recovered enough to assume a central defensive duty, while Francis Dickoh was sidelined.

They also questioned the exclusion of Mousa Narry of Etoile du Sahel and strikers, Joe Tex Frimpong and Razak Pimpong.

The popular opinion is that the absence of a cover for suspended John Mensah forced the coach to push Michael Essien to the back, thereby depriving the strikers of decent supplies from midfield.

Despite such overwhelming public blame of the coach, Randy Abbey, GFA spokesman, says the Frenchman has impressed in his two-year stay and merits a contract extension.

"We have absolute confidence in the coach and do not intend to dispense with his services," Abbey said.

He said the FA would meet with Le Roy to discuss the terms of his new contract at the expiration of the current one which is just days away.

''It is a shame we lost against Cameroon and I understand the frustrations of the fans but Le Roy has shown beyond all reasonable doubt that he is a good coach and he has all our support.''

Commenting on the GFA position, the French coach said he was surprised to hear of the GFA's intentions.

"I am very grateful for the confidence the GFA has shown in me and I am also ready to work with the team in the future.

"It is unusual for an African football association to give its vote of confidence a day after it has lost a crucial game, so this gesture means a lot to me."

Ghana played six matches in CAN 2008, won five and lost one, the crucial semi-final match to Cameroon 0-1. Ghana beat Guinea 2-1, Namibia 1-0, Morocco 2-0, Nigeria 1-0 and Cote d'Ivoire 4-2.
