Defending champions Cameroon are likely to be heavily fined after they continued to wear their controversial one-piece kits for Sunday's African Nations Cup quarter-final match here against Nigeria, officials told AFP.
"They should be ready to face the consequences," said Confederation of African Football (CAF) communications director, Souleymane Habuba.
Officials would not exactly say what the nature of the penalty against Cameroon would be but it is widely believed to be a hefty fine.
Cameroon have already been fined twice by the organising committee in the Monastir centre.
Defender Geremi was fined 500 dollars for encroaching on the pitch after their match against Egypt while the country's delegation were hit with a 300 dollar fine for turning up late at the pre-match meeting for Sunday's encounter.
Tournament organisers had warned the Indomitable Lions against wearing their controversial bodysuit-like kits, which FIFA claims runs foul of international standards, from the quarter-finals of the championship.
But Cameroon kit sponsors Puma informed CAF that they could not come up with a new set of kits before the end of the tournament on February 14.
The long-running row over the kits, which were deemed illegal by FIFA president Sepp Blatter at the start of the tournament here, has infuriated the team.
"The team is appalled by how FIFA can intervene and overrule something that has already been approved," said Cameroon skipper Rigobert Song.
"This playing kit issue has simply taken on ridiculous proportions. It is without a doubt, bitterly disappointing that we have to deal with this kind of nonsense in the middle of a top competition, given that we have received the go ahead by CAF, the organizing body in charge of the tournament.
"So, what's the problem?"
