Moroccan takes over national team, Olympic squad

Rabat, Morocco (PANA) - The Moroccan Royal Football Federation (FRMF) has appointed M'hamed Fakhir to coach the senior and Olympic national teams of Morocco in replacement of Frenchman Philippe Troussier, whose contract was terminated through "amicable agreement", reliable sources said here Monday.

The contract between the FRMF and Troussier was terminated last Friday through an "amicable agreement" prompted by "profound disagreements."

Under the agreement with the FRMF, Fakhir had to qualify the Atlas Lions for the 2008 CAN finals in Ghana and the Olympic team for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the same source explained.

Fethi Jamal, the current national technical manager, will be part of the technical staff along with Fakhir during the 2006 CAN finals in Egypt.

Fakhir, who was Troussier's main rival for the succession of Badou Zaki who resigned on 17 October after the Atlas Lions failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup, has had "surprising" results in the past years, notably by winning two Moroccan champion titles with Hassania of Agadir and two Throne cups, national league and CAF cup with the FAR.

Born in 1953, Fakhir joined the Raja de Casablanca School in 1967. He began his carrier as coach with the club's under 13.
