Nigeria bank on Sunday best to break Cameroon jinx

Nigeria aim to break a 12-year winless run against old rivals and defending champions Cameroon when the two clash here on Sunday in the quarter-finals of the African Nations Cup.
The last time Nigeria beat the Indomitable Lions in a competitive game was in the third-place match at the 1992 Nations Cup in Senegal, which the Super Eagles won 2-1.
But since that time, it has been the Cameroonians who have reigned supreme over their next-door neighbours.
"Playing against a big team like Cameroon can only bring out the best in us," said Everton defender Joseph Yobo, one of the few Nigerian players who have shone at this tournament.
"It is a big test for us and we have a chance to prove we are equal to the task because from the knockout stage of the competition it's a winner takes all thing.
"We just have to be at our best and have the confidence that we have what it takes to win and qualify for the semi-final."
The 23-year-old central defender said he is relishing a possible head-to-head clash with striker Patrick Mboma, who has so far scored four goals and is closing in on the championship all-time goals record.
"Mboma is a good player and I respect what he has achieved but I'm also not a bad player and such a match-up will only bring out the best in me," said Yobo.
The much-travelled Cameroon hitman has clearly spelt out his targets at Tunisia 2004.
"If we can win the trophy and I score three or four more goals, I will be the happiest man on earth," said the 33-year-old Tokyo Verdy of Japan ace, who has also played in France, England and Libya.
"Records interest me but at the same time my personal ambition should not come before the expectations of millions of Cameroonians, who are waiting for the cup."
But while Cameroon will have their full compliment of players, Nigeria will be without expelled stars Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Celestine Babayaro and Victor Agali who, despite being recalled to the squad, have all refused to return.
Portsmouth striker Aiyegbeni, Chelsea defender Babayaro and Schalke 04 striker Agali were all kicked out last week for breaking a curfew.
The two-time tournament winners could also be without striker Julius Aghahowa, who is nursing a knock he picked up in the final group match against Benin.
In his place will be the youngster Osaze Odemwingie, who struck twice when he came on as a substitute against South Africa.
Cameroon are chasing a record fifth Nations Cup crown and despite not playing their best football here in Tunisia, will always be a hard nut to crack.
However, the man who guided the Elephants of Ivory Coast to win the 1992 Nations Cup, Yeo Martial, has predicted an open contest with the team that makes best use of their abilities carrying the day.
"Nigeria have the more technically gifted players. However, they cannot afford to mix it up physically with the stronger and bigger Cameroonians," said Martial.
"They have to play like the Egyptians played against Cameroon but this time, they also have to convert their chances, which the Egyptians failed to do even though they controlled most of the game."
